Roles that resonate

I relish meaty emotional roles – for instance playing Shylock in my 30s and receiving great critical acclaim in the press. I adore the challenge of multi-roles, creating madcap characters like Beadle Bamford in Sweeney Todd (see bottom pic), and the joys of comedies and musicals that lift the heart and soul. And of course, a delectable baddy is always high on my list, particularly after the delight of bringing Mayor Firth to life in Murder Most Puzzling (image to left)

Moments to remember

I have been so lucky to play some phenomenal parts and thankful to the people who have put their trust in me. In my youth, the excitement of playing Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights was immeasurable. Making a mad, frantic West End debut in Blood Brothers after not performing in the show for two years is one of the big memories, and to play Dracula in Dracula was a dream come true.

Recently I was thrilled to play Senator George Mitchell in Agreement by Owen McCafferty at the Lyric Theatre Belfast and The Irish Arts Centre New York. To have real life Senator Mitchell come and see the show in Belfast and New York and to spend time with him will be one of the standout memories of my career. Just prior to that I realised an ambition to be in a big budget fantasy adventure when I played Lord Neverember in Dungeons and Dragons: Honour among Thieves, a tiny role but a vital one!
